Yes

Educational Background

  • Currently undertaking a Postgraduate Level  7 (UK) / Level 9 (Ireland) course in Play Therapy recognised by PTUK.
  • Full trainee membership with PTUK is required.

Client Work

  • SDQ scores between 11 –21. No Children in Care (LAC), Adopted, or SGO clients.
  • All clients must be discussed with  the member’s clinical supervisor before starting sessions.
  • Trainees cannot charge for client sessions for placement hours until qualified.

Age of Clients

All trainees are trained to work with children aged 4–13, but we recognise that some young people over 13 with additional needs or disabilities may still benefit from play therapy.

In these cases, trainees will only work where their competencies and training match the young person’s needs, and only start the work under consultation with the training provider, membership body and their clinical supervisor. 

Supervision Requirements

  • A ratio of 1:6, not to go over a fortnight between individual clinical supervisions whilst sessions are taking place.
  • Supervision must be with a current PTUK supervisor who is allowed to work with trainees.

Educational Background

Client Work

  • Can provide client sessions within an organisation such as a school, charity or independent company on a self-employed or employed basis. Can be paid for their services by parent or school, charity or organisation.
  • The practitioner can liaise with other professionals in a school with the parent’s knowledge. It would be best practice to obtain an SDQ from school staff and parent. If parent funding, contract can be written for parent regarding payment and school made aware of funding arrangements.
  • SDQ scores no higher than 21. No Children in Care (LAC), Adopted, SGO clients.
  • For all diploma trainees, all placement clients must be discussed with clinical supervisor before starting sessions and have a SDQ score over 21. These diploma clients cannot be charged sessions.

  • A minimum of 1½ hours of supervision each month.
  • Members with a high case load may need additional supervision. This should be discussed and agreed in supervision.
  • Supervision must be with a registered PTUK supervisor who is a current member of PTUK.

  • Members with Associate Membership will not be listed on the PTUK/PSA register and cannot practice under the umbrella of PTUK/PTI or use PTUK/PTI/PSA logos.

Honorary Membership is a prestigious title awarded by Play Therapy UK (PTUK) to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of play therapy or have significantly supported the aims and mission of PTUK.

This non-practising membership category recognises exceptional service, leadership or advocacy that has advanced the understanding, development, or delivery of therapeutic play and child mental health services. Honorary Members are nominated and appointed at the discretion of PTUK’s leadership and do not apply for this recognition.

While Honorary Members are not required to meet clinical practice or revalidation requirements, their contributions are deeply valued and celebrated within the PTUK community. This status is a reflection of PTUK’s commitment to acknowledging those who uphold and promote the highest standards in therapeutic work with children and young people.

Client Work

  • Certified Play Therapists are permitted to work with any SDQ scores. Working with Children in Care (LAC), Adopted and SGO clients may be possibly with the correct training and experience before doing so, there is a document explaining this in member resources section (working with Children in Care (LAC), SGO and Adopted)
  • Can work independently in their own practice. Ensuring risk assessment and health and safety checks and level 3 DSL safeguarding training is in place.
  • Qualified to work with children and young people/ adolescence.

Age of Clients

10 – 18 years.

Supervision Requirements

Whilst Training
1 hour of supervision for every 6 sessions.
A minimum of 30 minutes of supervision per month.

For any CYP clients, this work must be supervised with a PTUK registered supervisor holding the correct qualifications as outlined on the course.
The supervisor should also be CYP trained (with APAC) or if they hold another equivalent external qualification this will need to be verified by PTUK.

  • Have an up-to-date Data Protection / GDPR policy in place.
  • Have an up-to-date Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy in place.
  • Maintain valid Safeguarding Training ( PTUK members) /”Children First Online” training ( PTIRL members).
  • Complete Prevent Training (PTUK members).

Yes — apply for Non-Practising Membership and return when ready.

What happens if I don’t renew?

You will be removed from the register and lose access to all the PTUK membership platforms.

Members on current APAC courses should retain a full membership for the duration of their courses.

PSA register listing, access to PTUK resources and news, digital membership card, eligibility for specialist CPD and supervision routes.

Do I need to pay extra for additional qualifications?

No — Certified and Accredited members do not pay extra for PQ awards like Filial Play Coach or Supervisor.

When are fees due?

Fees are due annually. You’ll receive a renewal reminder 1 month before your renewal date.
